If you are strictly a conservative sit n go tournament player, then you may be missing some good opportunities to accumulate chips. If you will loosen a little at the right time and in the right situation, you will find a bountiful supply of chips ripe for the picking.
Here are a few examples:
1. The lonely big blind.
There it sits, all alone on the virtual green. The player in the big blind was eliminated in the previous hand, so in the current hand, the pot does not include a small blind. If you open the betting, try to steal that lonely big blind. Usually, it is up for grabs.
2. The lonely big blind fights back.
If you are the lonely big blind, expect a steal attempt. Re-steal your big blind.
3. The thief in the small blind.
There he sits, completing his small blind with a big raise, hand after hand. You dutifully surrender your big blind, hand after hand. But, your trap is set and waiting. Wait for two premium cards, then pounce.
4. Ride 'em to the river.
This one is a bit riskier, but will work in the right situation. It appears to be a trap, but it could just as easily be a stone cold, naked bluff. Simply smooth call all of your opponents bets to the river, then re-raise all-in. A slightly scary turn or river card, plenty of chips in your stack, and knowing your opponent very well helps to make this move successful.
5. Third time is a charm.
Say, you have successfully pushed all-in two times in a row. And, just as you hoped, there were no callers. Of course, your opponents are now steaming. Then, in the very next hand you find yourself holding two premium cards. What do you do? Try to trap? Heck no! Push all-in, again. Happily, this time you will be called.
6. The come back kid.
Watch for the player who, through luck and loose aggressiveness, comes back from a desperately short stack. These lucky players always seem to have a hard time shifting gears back into a more correct tight/aggressive style of play. They are likely on an adrenaline rush, and their logic is a little skewed. So, attack them with premium hands, and their stack will be yours.
7. Strike while there is confusion.
Following a big event, like two eliminations in the same hand, most players withdraw for a moment to assess the new table dynamic. Now is a good time to attack quickly, and in an out of character manner. The pot will be yours.
8. Double on the button.
When you are on the button and the small blind is eliminated, rejoice. You get to be the button two hands in a row.
The lesson is this:
Windows of opportunity, like any of the above eight and many more, open and close quickly throughout a sit n go. So, stay alert. Be creative.
And, capitalize on those fleeting opportunities to somewhat safely accumulate chips.
